There ain’t no place like the open highway.
There ain’t no thing like an open road.
There ain’t no town worth going back to.
Gotta travel light, can’t carry no load.

When I was young and full of promise,
I woke each day at the break of dawn.
But circumstances worked against me.
Now all my promises are gone.

CHORUS
And what have they done to route 66?
They’ve gone and chopped it into little bits.

I know that I am far from perfect,
I have my faults, I have my fears.
My better suit is in the cleaners,
And it’s been there for many years.

The place I come from ain’t important,
Nobody cried and nobody cheered.
One town’s the same as any other
If all you want’s a burger and a beer.

CHORUS

A tank of gas and some tobacco
A jug of wine and I’m good to go.
I’ve got a car near old as I am
It does the job but it ain’t built for show.

There ain’t no place like the open highway.
There ain’t no thing like an open road.
There ain’t no town worth going back to.
Gotta travel light, can’t carry no load.
